Treadmill programs can add challenges and offer fitness benefits. Variety is the spice of life.  This old English idiom indicates that life can be less tedious and more exciting if you change things up a bit and try different things.  Even treadmill workouts can be more fun when you use a variety of treadmill programs.

Changing up your treadmill workouts not only helps you to avoid workout boredom…it offers additional benefits, as well.

Benefiting From a Variety of Treadmill Programs

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise there is.  It requires no special skills and no special training.  Most people learn to walk at a very early age and continue to walk throughout the rest of their lives.  With the help of multiple treadmill programs, walking for exercise can become more challenging and interesting.  It can even inspire one to eventually take up jogging or running, as one’s fitness improves.

Below are listed some of the benefits of using a variety of treadmill programs:

  • Each workout program is designed with a particular purpose in mind…i.e. weight loss and cardiovascular health.  By integrating variety into your workouts, you are more likely to see improvement in your overall fitness.
  • The body responds better to exercise when there is variety in your workouts.  Repetition of the same workout routines, day after day, gives the body time to adapt.  Once it adapts, there will be little or no improvement in its physical state.  Therefore, it is important to change up your workouts regularly to challenge your body to improve further.
  • Using a variety of treadmill programs helps to keep you motivated to exercise and to stay focused on reaching your fitness goals.

Examples of the Various Treadmill Programs

Most treadmill models are equipped with several preprogrammed workouts from which to choose.  These programs make it easy to vary your workouts and realize the benefits of such variety.

The programs listed below are typical workouts found on today’s tread machines:

  • A hill climbing program is a great tool to help you train for future uphill hikes outdoors.  It will target your leg muscles and glutes and strengthen them in preparation for such excursions.  It will also help you to burn calories more efficiently at lower speeds.
  • Distance workout programs aim to build your endurance.  They are excellent routines for helping you train and get in shape for an upcoming walk or run event, such as a 5K.
  • Heart rate programs automatically increase or decrease the intensity of workouts so that you can maintain a targeted heart rate during exercise.  Such workouts are meant to improve your cardiovascular health, as you burn fat and calories.
  • Interval speed programs and interval incline programs automatically add variety by changing the intensity levels at intervals throughout each workout session.

Treadmills also come with manual programs that allow you to manually adjust the speed and incline levels at any time during the workout as you prefer.

Get Fit and Stay Fit by Varying Your Treadmill Workouts

To benefit the most from your treadmill exercise, take advantage of the various treadmill programs.  Try a different program each day or mix up the programs during one session.  Challenge your body regularly and see how well it responds.

Variety is, indeed, the spice of life!  Variety can spice up your workouts, as well as help you achieve your fitness goals.
